  History

The Durham Farmers’ Market has been offering fresh, local produce, artisanal foods and handcrafted wares in downtown Durham since 1998. When we started, the market was little more than a few farmers and crafters joining the kids from SEEDS in the gravel parking lot of the old Durham Bulls stadium on Morris Street. Through the tenacity of those early vendors (many of whom are still selling at the market) and the support of residents who saw the value of good, fresh local food and handmade crafts, we have expanded to more than 70 vendors.

In 2004, we moved up the street to the Measurement, Incorporated lot, which we quickly outgrew. Two years later, the Pavilion at Durham Central Park, was built, providing the market with a permanent home and structure. It would not have been possible without the generosity of Durham Central Park, the City of Durham, Self-Help, and local businesses and individuals.

In 2006, the market added a Winter Market, running every other Saturday from December thru March. We soon realized that the demand for fresh, local veggies remained high in the winter, and in 2008 the market became a truly year-round farmers market, open 51 weeks a year. In 2008 we also added a Wednesday market, which runs from mid-April through mid-October, from 3:30-6:30pm. The same year, a Thanksgiving Market was added, which occurs the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

The market has a long history of working to increase food access within our community. In 2005 we began accepting WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) checks and in 2008 we began accepting FMNP Senior’s Vouchers. In 2010, Farmer Foodshare added a Donation Station at the market. Between 2010 and 2013, the Durham Donation Station collected over 13,000 pounds of food which were donated to Iglesia Emanuel and the Reality Center. After several years of work, the DFM began accepting SNAP/EBT benefits in April 2014. In July of the same year, we started a Double Bucks Program, which doubles SNAP benefits up to $10. Thanks to a successful Indiegogo Campaign in the winter of 2014, the Double Bucks Program is fully funded through 2015.

The Durham Farmers’ Market has received national recognition as an outstanding source for local products. In 2009, we placed fourth in the Nationwide Favorite Farmers’ Market Contest. We’ve been recognized in The New York Times, Bon Appetit and USAToday. We hope you will join us every Saturday throughout the season for the freshest, best selection of local vegetables, meats, cheeses and eggs and a wide variety of cut flowers, potted plants, medicinal herbs and handmade crafts.
