Happy New Years!

Welcome, 2023! We are so thankful for all of the support and community that you have shared with us this year, and cannot wait to see what the coming year holds. Wishing you a year of provision and joy, Durham!

Thanks from the Food Donation Table

This year, y’all really shined in your generosity. Every week, Chris and the folks load the overflowing table of fresh produce, bread, eggs, meat, and goods into the volunteer truck to haul to Mount Calvary United Church of Christ Food Pantry and distribute to centers and community members in need across the area. Thanks to Chris and all the dedicated volunteers who show up rain or shine to accept these wonderful donations, and a BIG thanks to our customers and vendors for all your generosity in giving to our community through food and cash donations. Thank you for providing food in a big way in 2022! We are grateful for you.

The Countdown Begins!

The countdown to 2023 and to the end-of-year holidays has begun! With just a few Saturdays left in December, we are grateful for each opportunity we have to spend this special time together preparing to welcome winter season, visiting the market with friends and family, enjoying all of the holiday decorations and specials on display at the vendor tables, and gathering thoughtful gifts and holiday meal supplies while supporting the local farmers and creators we love. It is truly a special time at the DFM and we celebrate the opportunity to enjoy it with you, Durham!

As we take a moment to mark Winter Solstice this week, and all that the season brings to us, we want to share a winter solstice blessing and a favorite poem from a couple of our market vendors:

A Winter Solstice Blessing, shared by Noah from Fickle Creek Farm

May you find peace in the promise of the solstice night,

that each day forward is blessed with more light.

That the cycle of nature, unbroken and true,

brings faith to your soul and wellbeing to you.

Rejoice in the darkness, in the silence find rest,

and may the days that follow be abundantly blessed.

Some Functions of a Leaf  by Don McKay, shared by David from Fruchtenicht Honey to say thank you and mark his last market day until spring

To whisper, to applaud the wind

And hide the hermit thrush.

To catch the light

And work the humble spell of photosynthesis

by which it’s changed to wood.

To wait

Willing to feed

                And be food

To die with style:

As the tree retreats inside itself,

Shutting off the valves at its

Extremities

    To starve in Technicolor, then

Having served two hours in a children’s leaf pile, slowly

Stir its vitamins into the earth

To be the artist of mortality.

Winter Market has Begun!

We had so much fun ringing in our winter market season with you last week! You’ll find us again this Saturday from 10a-12pm at Durham Central Park. Stop by the info booth to pick up a map & find all your favorite vendors!

Last week we got a glimpse of the variety of seasonal gifts and grocery staples that our farmers and creators have planned for us this winter. To name just a few: Holiday wreaths, candles, decorations, stocking stuffers, and gifts; hot chocolate, bagged whole coffee beans, chocolate from our local artisans, soaps and bath balms, ornaments, mead, cider, and kombucha, and lots more.

Plan your holiday meals early and pre-order your locally raised and loved meat from one of our amazing farmers. You can check out the newsletter link below for details on what they have on offer.

We are always blown away by the color and variety of the produce our vendors bring to the table every week, and winter market is no exception! Find purple and orange sweet potatoes, large and small vine-ripened tomatoes, the freshest lettuces, kales and collards, colorful red and watermelon radishes to brighten up your dishes, fresh peanuts, brussels sprouts, and hot peppers and more.
