Month: August 2023

Market is OPEN August 19th, 8am – 12pm!

Seasons Changing, Goodness Abounds

Late August means more change is in the air. This week we’ve talked to customers and vendors who are sending their kids to college and helping them prepare for this new season of life, and to some of our Sprouts Club Kids who are also getting ready to go back to school. It still feels like we have so much of summer ahead of us, with these hot temperatures and all of the gorgeous harvests coming out of the fields. But slowly nature is preparing for the calming of fall. When we will see the first turning of the leaves? We can almost taste the sweet refreshing crunch of the fall season’s many varieties of leafy greens. But we’re not rushing it yet! It is a good reminder to get out to the market and enjoy all the bountiful varieties of summer fruits and veggies, and to soak in those summer feelings. We’re sure grateful to spend our summers with you. See you Saturday, Durham!

Why do we love shopping at local markets? Check out the top 5 reasons below and share with us what you love!

Farmers’ markets:
1.) Preserve farmland
2.) Stimulate local economies
3.) Increase access to nutritious food
4.) Support healthy communities
5.) Promote sustainability

We look forward to welcoming you to market to share in the local produce, meat, eggs, cheese, bread, crafts, and more! All vendors at the market come from 70 miles away or less. This means that the produce was most likely picked just the day before, making sure that it is as fresh as possible! Farmers love to share their favorite recipes or tell you how your food was grown, making farmers’ markets a very special place to shop.

This Week’s Recipe: Bitter Melon Stir Fry by Liv Wan

Looking to expand your cooking repertoire and try something new? Here’s a recipe highlighting the unique Bitter Melon that is in season at the market!

From the chef: Bitter melon is a gourd originating from India that was introduced into China during the 14th century. It has since become a commonly used vegetable in Chinese households and is as popular now as it was a few hundred years ago. Bitter melon tastes bitter just as the name suggests. The texture can be either crunchy or soft, depending on how you prepare it. This recipe is a simple stir-fry that creates a flavor base with garlic, chili flake, soy sauce, red wine vinegar, and sesame oil sauce. A little sugar helps combat the bitterness. There are also plenty of variations on bitter melon stir-fries that involve adding proteins such as dried shrimp or pork. Serve as a side dish for pork, chicken, or seafood alongside rice or noodles.

Find this recipe along with cooking tips, ingredient variations, and step-by-step photos at: The Spruce Eats
